Namaste Yogis and Yoginis,
Ahhh, the warm sun is all over me. I love this season as nature blooms all around. It's been so instrumental in refreshing my practice and helping me to see the things newly. Spring is magical like that. Take some time to allow it to inspire and rejuvenate your practice your routine. In this issue of YOGALICIOUS I'm focusing on ideas to encourage the blossoming in all of us.

Enjoy, Jillian

DATES I’M AWAY

WORDS OF WISDOM
“I don’t think of all the misery, but of all the beauty that still remains.” Anne Frank

BRAND NEW SUN
“The Navajo teach their children that every morning when the sun comes up, it’s a brand-new sun. It’s born each morning, it lives for the duration of one day, and in the evening, it passes on, never to return again. As soon as the children are old enough to understand, the adults take them out at dawn and they say, “The sun has only one day. You must live this day in a good way, so that the sun won’t have wasted precious time.” Acknowledging the preciousness of each day is a good way to live, a good way to reconnect with our basic joy.” From Wisdom of No Escape by Pema Chodron.   back to top

CHILL OUT
Just in time for the heat, Shitali (pronounced sheet-al-lee) in known for it’s cooling effect on the body and mind. Traditionally, it is believed to remove fever, still hunger, quench thirst, and alleviate diseases of the spleen. Here’s how you do this Cooling Breath:
1. Sit comfortably on the floor or in a chair. Relax your body.
2. Stick out the tip of your tongue curl up it lengthwise, so the edges roll towards each other forming a tube or straw. Let the tip of your tongue protrude from your mouth.
3. Then slowly sip in the air through your tongue, as if you were breathing through a straw. Exhale gently through your nose. Repeat 10 to 15 times.

YES-SCENTS
My “fresh and peppy” oil mixture this month has gotten rave reviews by many of you. Remember to use this recipe only as a guideline and be willing to add a little more of this or that until it works out to “perfect”. Blend the following essential oils in a base of unscented almond or apricot oil.
1. Orange: Brings peace and happiness to the mind and body. (start with 10 drops)
2. Tangerine: Calming. Helps with anxiety and nervousness. (start with 8 drops)
3. Peppermint: Aids digestions and inspires mental clarity. (start with 6 drops)
4. Rosemary: Helps with mental fatigue. (start with 3 drops)

TURNING OFF AUTO-PILOT

Lately, I have been experimenting with a new way of breathing in a vinyasa flow. It goes like this; instead of synchronizing the breath exactly with the movement, wait one or two seconds for the breath to start and THEN initiate the movement. The 'waiting’ becomes a mindful pause, and sharpens my alertness throughout the vinyasa flow making it effortless to stay present. This is especially helpful when you do things so repetitively it becomes hard to make them feel new.

Try it yourself: Use a simple flow like Cat. Get down on all fours in cat pose, pause for a moment and feel the ground under your hands and knees. Inhale, allow a second or two of breath to inflate you, then arch and look up. Exhale; let a second(s) of breath flow out, then round your back to the sky. Stay rounding as you allow for the inhale to start, waiting for a second(s) before you flow back into the arch. Continue like this for 10-20 breaths. Feel what you are doing. Experiment with this technique in the sun solutes or a jump series.  back to top

OMEGA EVENT
Last weekend I had the honor of being on the core faculty for the Omega Institute Spring Conference, The Spiritual Adventure, 2001. In addition to teaching Yoga, I attended a few lectures. My mom joined me. There were about 1200 attendees. Our first session was a lecture with Eckhart Tolle author of The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. He’s an excellent speaker with a friendly, soft, theatrical voice. His feathery voice reminded me of the narrator from Whinnie the Pooh - which made it even more interesting and fun. I haven’t read his book, but if it’s anything like his lecture, I imagine it’s worth the read. Spalding Gray gave a lively performance he called A Personal History of Not Knowing. Elizabeth Lesser, co-founder of Omega and author of The Seeker’s Guide: Making Your Life a Spiritual Adventure, spoke on The Landscape of Death. Her book has received exceptional reviews on Amazon. Lastly, we sat in on Ram Dass who spoke on The Path of Devotion. Dass is the author of Be Here Now. He is also famous for his spiritual teachings and his work with Timothy Leary on the research of altered states of consciousness. There were many other renowned speakers and events over the weekend. I do recommend it for next year.   back to top
