ROCKS, PEBBLES AND SAND WORKSHOPS TO DEEPEN YOUR PRACTICE
YOGA IN PARADISE

WORDS OF WISDOM
“And there came a time when the risk of remaining closed tight in a bud far outweighed the risk it took to bloom.” Anis Nin

GOING DEEPER
Last week I was 9300 feet high... At a retreat center, nestled in the aspen covered mountains of southern Utah where I studied with Yoga Master JOHN FRIEND. John developed a system called ANUSARA Yoga. I explored new alignment techniques and experienced the power of intention, willingness and grace. With John's expert guidance, I was able to work with a tendon injury in my hand and cultivate the courage to go deeper than I've gone in a long time. Going deeper in poses (safely, with the help of a teacher) can bring great feelings of aliveness, strength, and confidence. With the heat and playfulness of summer, it is a perfect time to adventure deeper into your yoga and/or meditation practice; conditions are ripe to bloom wide-open. It is also an ideal time to stay committed. Even if you are vacationing frequently this summer or spending more time socializing (which is all good) don't lax on your practice. Find a class on vacation or develop your personal practice at home. Invite your friends to practice with you one the beach or in the park. In addition, come to one of the workshops listed below for extra inspiration.   back to top

SAFETY ZONE
"Our mind is always seeking zones of safety. We're in this zone of safety and that's what we consider life, getting it all together, security. Death is loosing that. That's what we fear, that's what makes us anxious? We want to know what's happening. The mind is always seeking zones of safety, and these zones of safety are continually falling apart. Then we scramble to get another zone of safety back together again. We spend all our energy and waste our lives trying to re-create these zones of safety, which are always falling apart." Pema Chodron. from Wisdom of No Escape.   back to top

PLACES THAT SCARE YOU

Over Memorial Day, I did a three-day silent retreat entitled "The Places That Scare You", with Pema Chodron, an American Buddhist nun (see above quote). Her premise is that there is a fundamental happiness readily available to each one of us, no matter how difficult things seem to be. To find it, we must learn to stop running from our fear and instead actually learn to approach it - fearlessly, and with curiosity. She taught various meditation practices to learn to approach anxiety and pain with a relaxed body and heart. She emphasized not trying to change yourself with meditation; it never matters if you "get anywhere" because just doing the practice makes you more awake, conscious. As a yogi, this rings true to me because we are not trying to make our poses perfect or reach a goal. Instead, we use the asanas as a process of becoming more mindful, sensitive, compassionate, steadfast and open. Most importantly, Pema reminded us to find the Buddha(love, wisdom, compassion) within -- don't expect someone else to have it or to give it to you. VIDEO
Kathy Smith's Wellness, Mind and Body, Relaxation System is not a 'formal yoga practice' but it is yoga inspired - and easy to follow. The production is a little quirky, but it is a good selection for your friends or family who (for whatever reason) are not so open to Yoga or meditation but could use it. It's friendly and easy to follow. In addition, it comes packaged with an audiotape that contains two 20-minute guided easy to follow meditations which she calls "relaxation". DEDICATING YOUR EFFORTS
Perhaps you know someone who cannot physically do yoga or is not able or open to trying it. Consider supporting them by dedicating the fruits of your practice to them. This ritual is not only good for them, but for you too! It helps develop your own loving-kindness, open heartedness. Try it. Begin your yoga session with a few moments of quite sitting. With out judgment or expectation, bring to mind someone who could benefit from the practice. See this person fully. (Remember this is not about trying to get someone to do yoga or thinking that they 'should' do yoga. Instead, it is about offering, unconditionally, your efforts for their benefit.) If you wish, be specific about some of the effects you wish to cultivate for them: deep healing, ease of pain, fearlessness, peace, a relaxed body or mind. Finish your session with a few minutes of quiet sitting and revisit your dedication. Notice how you feel.   back to top

ROCKS, PEBBLES AND SAND
A philosophy professor began class. He wordlessly picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks about 2 inches in diameter. He asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was. So the professor picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed. Again, he asked if it was full? They agreed, now, it actually was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled everything else. "Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life. The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, your children - anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.” - Author Unknown   back to top
