Namaste Yogis and Yoginis,

Welcome to YOGALICIOUS issue 12. Here on the East Coast, it has been such a perfect summer; the weather is gorgeous, the fruits delicious, the flowers exquisite. After this drawn-out winter, I am especially grateful for this gift and inspired to dedicate this issue to the practice of gratitude, surrender, and celebration. I wish for you some play time. Time to open your heart, mind, and body: to sit in a park, wake up early and take a walk, and experience nature's bounty!

Enjoy! Jillian

WORDS OF WISDOM
“You can’t push a wave onto the shore any faster than the ocean brings it in.” Susan Strasberg

JUST DO IT
Most of us have been encouraged to "do more" all our lives: learn, succeed, earn, and obtain more. We're trained to achieve and applauded for striving. Of course, this is important to survive comfortably in our culture and explore our fullest potential. Yet, we are rarely encouraged to delve into the subtleties of "letting go". Yoga has been the first discipline in my life where I've actually practiced the skill of surrender. The core of my practice has been to learn how to create balance between effort and surrender. The poses quickly became a mirror to study my habits and patterns of pushing and doing. Perhaps you've experienced that applying to much force in a posture will either get you injured, make you more tight, or more irritated. Once you perceive when and how you push, you can be more mindful and precise about backing off and relaxing. With this awareness, even the poses most arduous for you become manageable. The fruits of your labor will become really juicy when you begin to practice this in your life, off your mat. Instead of struggling and trying to force an answer or a resolution, you simply stay aware, relax more and allow things to develop on their own. As you experiment with this moment by moment, remember "You can't push a wave onto shore any faster than the ocean brings it in."   back to top

YIN YOGA
Check out Yoga Journal's August feature article YIN YOGA, by Paul Grilley. Yin Yoga requires the practitioner to surrender into holding posses passively, without muscular effort, for up to 5 minutes. Paul's book TAOIST YOGA: Outline of a Quiet Practice, discusses the theory that the meridians (energy pathways) are within the connective tissues of the body (fascia and ligaments). Through slow Yin stretches, you can open blockages in these meridians and prepare your body to sit comfortably in meditation. YUMMY SWEETIE
Enjoy a Sweet Potato today. They are so easy to cook - just wrap it in tin foil and bake until soft. Sweet potatoes are a super source of beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin c, magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, thiamin, iron, and other vitamins and minerals. They are fat and cholesterol free, very low in sodium and a good source of fiber.   back to top

STICK OUT YOUR TONGUE
I love this mouth cleaning ritual. The tongue cleaner is an ancient practice that dates back to the Roman Empire and is a regular part of Ayurvedic health care today. It acts like a squeegee to remove the coating of plaque and bacteria on the tongue; removing up to an additional 60% of bacteria left in the mouth after brushing and flossing. Scraping the tongue also helps prevent bad breath, cavities, gum; and it cleans the palate to better taste your food! You can them find in health food stores and most pharmacies.    back to top

GRATITUDE
At the end of my yoga practice or meditation, when my body and heart are most open, I often bring to mind what ever I am grateful for at that moment. At first, I only did this occasionally, when I was happy and connected. After a while, I noticed that when I was down, or feeling challenged it was harder to remember those feelings of deep gratitude. Therefore, I began to practice everyday (before I go to bed too.) I find this practice very healing. It connects me to my joy and love instantly. I also think that it is an important point of view to keep fresh especially if you consider that... "Our experience of life is not based on our life, but on what we pay attention to."   back to top

METTA PRAYER

This is one of my favorites and I often recite it to conclude class. You can do it anytime. Center yourself with a few conscious breaths and begin by offering yourself the prayer, then bring to mind someone you would to offer the prayer to~ picture them fully as you recite it; then say the prayer for all beings everywhere.

May I (you) be at peace May my (your) heart remain open May I (you) awaken to the light of you own true nature May I (you) be healed and may I (you) be a source of healing for all others

May all beings every where be at peace May the hearts of all beings remain open May all beings everywhere awaken to the light of their own true nature May all beings be healed and may all beings be a source of healing for all others   back to top

His focus over the weekend will be The Problem with Limits: Every so often we confront the point that we believe to be the best that we can do. Yet the path of spiritual development tells us that it is always possible to go beyond that point. Examine how asana can be used to constructively liberate such potential. And, The Paradox of the One and the All: Yoga claims to have a universal and transcendent foundation that unites the spirituality of all times and peoples. Yet within this universality we are all uniquely individual. How can we practice in such a way that we preserve our individuality while still attaining the desired goal of union with the Supreme All?
