 N E W S L E T T E R.. A R C H I V E S • Y O G A L I C I O U S #14 September / 2001

Namaste Dear Friends,

This issue of YOGALICIOUS comes to you with deep love and peace. Teaching in NYC and Hoboken this past week, has been a great source of strength and illumination for me. I have never been so grateful to do my work. I have never seen strangers be so unconditionally willing to care and support each other; it's a great reminder that our true nature is of love and compassion. And, although, I too have moments when I want to shrink up into a ball (or run for the hills), I continue to find faith in Edwin Chapin's words, “Out of Suffering have emerged the strongest souls.”

While there is so much I want to express, I have decided to devote this issue to ideas for healing, coping, and rebuilding.

With gratitude and support,
Jillian

BUDDHA'S WORDS OF WISDOM

“Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your thought unguarded”

“The thought manifests as the word; The word manifests as deed; The deed develops into habit; And habit hardens into character. So watch the thought and its ways with care, and let it spring from love Born out of concern for all beings.”

PRACTICE NOW
This great loss and injustice effect us all. Each of us will experience a wide range of emotions for a long time to come. You may find yourself wavering back and forth - daily, hourly, or even moment by moment - between feelings of strength and weakness, fear and faith, anger and peace, love and hate, sorrow and joy, anxiety and grounded-ness. Don't be judgmental of your feelings, know that it's all normal. It is ESSENTIAL to continue your practice and make healing a priority. Your practice will help release these intense emotions, so they don't get stuck inside. While I am a huge advocate of personal practice, right now I HIGHLY recommend going to group classes. It is good to be around other practicing yogis and to join energy as a community. Practice as often as possible. But keep in mind, you may need a different intensity or sequence from what is being taught, so listen to your inner voice and adjust your practice to how you feel at that time. Rest when you need to. Do not be habitual with your practice. Do not be habitual with anything right now. It is imperative to sharpen your mindfulness practice- your attention to yourself, others and the environment.   back to top

BETTER THAN SHEEP
Is your mind constantly racing? Try Counting Your Exhales. You can use this technique to begin yoga practice, mediation, when trying to sleep, or even before a business meeting. Sit or lay comfortable. Take a few juicy letting-go breaths. Then begin on an exhale and count the number 10 (maybe you?d like to picture the number as you mentally count it.) On the next exhale lightly concentrate on the number 9. Then continue to count down on each exhale. When you get to one, start again with 10. Continue the cycle for 3-5 minutes. When your mind begins to wander just notice it; with out judgement draw your attention back to the number of the breath you are on. Do not be surprised or upset if you forget the number you are on, simply start again at 10.   back to top

WORDS FROM HIS HOLINESS, THE DALAI LAMA
Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries . . . It lies with each of us individually . . . What is important is that we each make a sincere effort to take seriously our responsibility for each other and for the natural environment. .    back to top

KARMA'S CAUSE AND EFFECT
Janiss Garza talks about Karma's cause and effect. "You don't have to believe in past lives to understand the concept of Karma. We all create Karma every day through our actions. Is your Karma good or bad? It's up to you." http://yoga.about.com/library/weekly/aa091401a.htm   back to top

PRAYER FOR SOLIDARITY AND JUSTICE The Terma Collective
May our eyes remain open even in the face of tragedy.
May we not become disheartened.
May we find in the dissolution of our apathy and denial, the cup of the broken heart.
May we discover the gift of the fire burning in the inner chamber of our being-- burning great and bright enough to transform any poison.
May we offer the power of our sorrow to the service of something greater than ourselves.
May our guilt not rise up to form yet another defensive wall.
May the suffering purify and not paralyze us.
May we endure; may sorrow bond us and not separate us.
May we realize the greatness of our sorrow and not run from its touch or its flame.
May clarity be our ally and wisdom our support.
May our wrath be cleansing, cutting through the confusion of denial and greed.
May we not be afraid to see or speak our truth.
May the bleakness of the wasteland be dispelled.
May the soul's journey be revealed and the true hunger fed.
May we be forgiven for what we have forgotten and blessed with the remembrance of who we really are.

SUGGESTIONS FROM A FRIEND
This is an abbreviated version of suggestions for this time ~ sent out by Yoga Master John Friend:
1. Meditate and pray each day for world peace and unity.
2. Affirm Life by offering beauty with every act, word or imaginative thought. Adorn yourself with colorful, beautiful clothing. Offer radiant smiles wherever you go.
3. Help build community by engaging with neighbors.
4. Keep your investments where they are. Buy stock this week. Go shopping and buy something that you would like. If we contract our money usage in the next couple of weeks, an economic recession is highly likely, and the terrorists will be very happy.
5. Conserve energy by taking public transportation. Turn off unnecessary electrical devices. This will help to stabilize energy supplies and therefore prices.
6. Write your congressman and demand more funding for alternative fuel sources. If the US attacks in the Middle East, oil supplies will be disrupted. To find the contact numbers for the congressmen in your area use this Internet link: http://capwiz.com/msnbc/home/default.asp
