   N E W S L E T T E R.. A R C H I V E S • Y O G A L I C I O U S #28 MARCH 2003

NamasteYogis and Yoginis,

I am not sure about where you live, but here in NYC it has been an unforgettable winter. We have grown frozen from the relentless weather and anxiety producing media. We are so used to being rigid, that relaxing and letting go might seem unnatural. Nevertheless, with the Spring Equinox around the corner, a big thaw is about to happen and in just a few weeks, the days will become longer, the air warmer and life will reemerge. Phew!

This 'packed' issue of Yogalicious offers tips to harness the transformational energy and the ritual of Spring-Cleaning. The starting point for Spring-Cleaning is to eliminate the "stuff" that is holding you back and consuming your space and energy. This "stuff" includes toxic food and material possessions as well as limiting ideas, emotions, and unresolved situations. In order to open to the new, you need to let go of the 'stuff' weighing you down.

So get ready for spring, as very soon we will be celebrating life as it shoots up through the soil (and sidewalks)!

With joy,
Jillian

WORDS OF WISDOM

"HAVE FUN. Hum bird song. Blossom with laughter. Hatch a new direction. Plant soul seeds. Irrigate with teardrops. Spread warmth. Celebrate! " Author unknown

2003 SPRING (VERNAL) EQUINOX

In the Northern Hemisphere, spring begins March 20, 6pm MST. On this day, the earth is tilted so the sun is directly over the equator and the length of night and day are equal. Learn about Equinox celebrations at: http://www.religioustolerance.org/spring_equinox.htm   back to top

CLEARING OUT CLUTTER
In Clutter's Last Stand, Aslett suggests, "Getting the clutter out of your life can and will rid you of more discouragement, tiredness, and boredom than anything else you can do." Ask yourself, how many things are you holding onto just in case you need them? Make a plan to go through your whole house slowly (maybe one room a week.) Don't look upon the cleaning as a chore but as a chance to let "the new" into your life. Get rid of things that are no longer of use such as pens out of ink, expired medicine, out dated foods, old perfume or makeup, clothes that might fit someday. Remember, just because you bought it once doesn't mean you have to keep it forever.    back to top

PURIFY YOUR BODY

Beware of herbs, pills, powders, teas, trendy fasts, and diets that claim to "cleanse the colon," "purify the blood," "clarify the mind," and "flush out toxins." While some users might find these programs to support good health, many of these options can be very harmful. I feel strongly that it is NEVER wise to make any extreme sudden changes in your diet or 'take' anything with out professional guidance of a doctor. In stead, I encourage you to develop a simple balanced approach Cleansing your body. You don't need to spend money on magic potions. These simple changes can make a dramatic difference in your energy level, mental clarity, moods, and weight.
1. Start each day with warm water and lemon. Drink at least 8 glasses a day.
2. Eat smaller healthier portions more often during the day. (3 small meals and 2 light snacks.)
3. Eat fresh food. Eliminate prepackaged, canned and frozen foods.
4. Eat 3 servings of fruit and at least 4 servings of vegetables. Try to stick with fresh organic produce. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, beets, kale, lemon, cranberries, pears and apples are particularly effective at promoting the natural detoxification process.
5. Add warming spices and detoxifying herbs to your meals, salads, or tea. To help with digestion, elimination, and purification use ginger, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric or cardamom. For herbs try Dandelion, Parsley or Peppermint.
6. Add Omega3 oils (fresh oily fish, flaxseeds, walnuts, linseeds, flaxseeds, pumpkins seeds, dark leafy greens) to help balance the body and mental function.
7. Enjoy steamed Brown Rice, Quinoa, or whole grains instead of bread, pasta, and white rice.
8. Limit saturated fats, dairy products, and red meat. They slow your digestion.
9. Limit sugar. It suppresses the immune system, damages the digestive track, creates mood swings and causes much more damage than good.
10. Most importantly, don't starve yourself! Your body will react by saving up excess fat, instead of letting you burn it off. This will only keep the toxins inside.

FREE YOUR MIND AND SPIRIT

Spring is the opportunity to shed unhelpful patterns and discard energies and ideas that no longer fit us. Take some time and think about 'what's weighing you down'. Sit down with your journal and jot down a few things that come to your mind. (i.e.: fear, guilt, negative self-view.) Do not get hung up in the process, write whatever comes. Then review your list. For each item, ask "Am I willing to let go of this?" … Now is the time to become more who you really are, to plant your "seeds". Ask yourself, "what are my goals, dreams, and aspirations? What do I want to harvest?"   back to top

NEED MORE HELP LETTING GO? Read this great yogi myth…
Long ago, a wise yogi was walking down a road. From off in the distance, he heard a terrible moaning and groaning. As he hurried to give aid, the cries of pain grew stronger. He came upon a man hugging a huge thorn bush, his face and arms scratched and bleeding. "Help me, help me," cried the man.
"My son," said the yogi, "I have a solution for you ... Let go of the thorn bush."
Slowly the man removed first one arm. Then the other. Finally, with the wise man's suggestion, he was able to step back from the thorn bush. The man smiled. "I feel great!" he told the yogi. "Thank you."
But in the next moment, a wave of uneasiness overcame the man. He narrowed his eyes and looked at the yogi with suspicion. "You can't have it! This is my thorn bush!" And he grasped the bush even harder than before.
The yogi shrugged his shoulders and silently blessed the man as he walked down the road, the cries of agony fading into the distance.

NEWS REPORTS WEIGHING YOU DOWN? This is a MUST read.
The fear and anxiety caused by the possibility of war are the biggest health challenges we face right now. As a physician, I know full well that emotions such as fear and anger impede the healing process and, if held long enough, actually lock us into a vicious cycle that produces more pain, more fear, and more anxiety. This can wreak havoc on our minds, bodies, and spirits. But this doesn’t have to be the case." DRY BRUSH YOUR SKIN
The skin is one of the five main elimination channels of the body. It's estimated that one third of all impurities leaving the body are eliminated through the skin. A dry brush massage exfoliates and promotes detoxification through the skin while stimulating the lymphatic system. Learn more at: http://www.parksville.net/wellness/1298/drybrush.htm   back to top

MORE TIPS TO LIGHTEN UP
Take brisk walks. Deep breathing, sweat, and fresh air are all help flush out toxins.
• Soak in a hot bath with peppermint oil.
• Avoid too much television and upsetting news. (Headlines are designed to keep you afraid and dis-empowered so that you will buy more papers or watch more TV.)
• Pay outstanding bills.
• Get your sleep. 7-8 hours each night!

YOGA FOR THE SPRING
Yoga always places a high value on purification of body and mind at all levels, all the time. But maximize this process by harnessing the spring energy. A spring yoga practice should build some extra heat and incorporate more twists and inversions. Heat helps generate sweat and naturally detoxify our bodies. Twists stimulate the organs (especially the liver) and balance the hemispheres of the brain to enable greater mental and emotional balance. Inversions aid the flow of blood back to the lungs and heart for purification. In addition, inversions and most yoga asanas assist the lymphatic system. The Lymphatic system circulates lymph fluid and transports cellular waste, viruses, and bacteria from the tissues to the lymph nodes. Enjoy your practice knowing you are cleansing every class!

MEDITATION TO PURIFY THE EARTH
As we focus on our own purification this spring, don't forget to extend the process to our earth and all it's beings. I enjoy this meditation. Get grounded in a comfortable seat and drop into your breath. When you feel relaxed and present, begin to visualize our earth as a globe. See the beautiful sphere in space. Visualize beams of light radiating from your heart, surrounding the globe. With love from your heart and mind, transmit the aspects of Peace, Wisdom, Co-Operation, Tolerance, Respect, Compassion, Clarity, Harmony, and Balance. Let these light qualities saturate the globe and into all it's beings. When the earth is glowing with these energies, allow them to reflect gently back to you.
