Namaste Yogis and Yoginis,As
we often learn in yoga, grasping tightly to our expectations, opinions,
and ideas hinders our experience, limiting our ability to see or
feel things as they actually are. Pema Chodron teaches that "
Using
your belief system this way creates a situation in which you choose
to be blind instead of being able to see, to be deaf instead of
being able to hear, to be dead rather than alive, asleep rather
than awake."
A mindful yoga and meditation practice
invariably helps us loosen our grip on our expectations
so that we can know less and experience more. This issue
of Yogalicious offers inspirations for turning off auto-pilot and
releasing the clutch on fixed ideas, in order to experience life,
as it is, with fresh, open eyes.
With out expectations,
Jillian

WORDS
OF WISDOM |
|
"Those
who are full of their own opinions will be deaf to words of wisdom
from others. In a discussion between two persons, what often happens
is that each is intent on asserting his own views. As a result,
apart from hearing his own voice or views, he does not learn anything
else."

| SEEING
FOR THE FIRST TIME |
|
"We look
at things always with old eyes. You come to your home; you look
at it without looking at it. You know it -- there is no need to
look at it. You have entered it again and again for years. You go
to the door, you enter the door; you may unlock the door. But there
is no need to look. This whole process goes on robot-like, mechanically,
unconsciously. If something goes wrong, only if your key is not
fitting into the lock, then you look at the lock. If the key fits,
you never look at the lock. Because of mechanical habits, you lose
the capacity to look; you lose the freshness to look. Really, you
lose the function of your eyes. You become basically blind, because
eyes are not needed."

| SURFING
THE BREATH INTO THE MOMENT |
| Conscious rhythmic
breathing is an excellent way to practice becoming present. Try it:
Lie down on a comfortable surface, bend your knees, feet flat on floor.
Let your body be still and quiet. As you relax, simply observe the
quality and activity of your natural breath, without judgment or interference.
Just watch it. You may notice that your breath is uneven and inconsistent.
It might oscillate between quick and slow, smooth and choppy. Don't
"change" your breath. Simply watch it rise and fall, as
it is. I find it helpful to imagine the way a surfer rides waves;
a surfer must be completely in sync with the waves. Imagine the breath
the as the ocean. Rest your mind on each wave as it rises and falls;
body surf your breath. As you relax and become increasingly sensitive
to the flow of your breath, you'll naturally become more present.
Try this for 5-10 minutes. It is wonderful to do first thing when
in the morning. Moreover, this will really make a difference on the
days you cannot find time to do your yoga practice. back

| KNOW
YOU DON'T KNOW |
| "In times of change,
learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully
equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists."-- Eric
Hoffer |
| |
| TURNING
OFF THE ASANA AUTO-PILOT |
|
As an experiment, I've been
trying a new way of breathing in vinyasa flow. It goes like this;
instead of synchronizing the breath exactly with the movement, wait
one or two mille-seconds for the breath to start and THEN initiate
the movement. The 'waiting' becomes a mindful 'Pause', and sharpens
my alertness throughout the vinyasa flow making it effortless to
stay present. This is especially helpful when you do things so repetitively
it becomes hard to make them new. Try it yourself: Use a simple
flow like Cat. Get down on all fours in cat pose, pause for a moment
and feel the ground under your hands and knees. Allow the inhale
to begin, feel it inflating you then begin your movement, releasing
the belly to the floor as you gaze up. Allow the exhale to begin,
pause, and after you feel the breath releasing then round your back
to the sky. Let the inhale begin before you initiate your flow back
into the arch. Continue like this for 10-20 breaths. Feel what you
are doing. back

| INTUITIVE
MIND AS TEACHER |
| Albert
Einstein says "The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational
mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors
the servant and has forgotten the gift."
Our yoga practice
can help us tap the intuitive mind through our work with the body.
As we move deeper into our practice, we develop an acute mindfulness,
the skill of listening inward. The skill of listening to our bodies
can eventually help us develop the ability to become more intuitive
and clear minded in the process of making daily and life changing
decision. Read this article on Following Intuition by Shakti Gawain.

| SUMMER
EATING |
| These suggestions
are from Ayurvedic expert, Dr. Partap Chauhan. http://www.ayurvedic.org.
Summer is classified as "the period of dehydration". The
diet should mainly consist of cooling, sweet foods and drinks. Cucumber,
watermelon, fruits, fruit juices (excluding citrus), grains, wheat,
rice, and milk are ideal. Of course, plenty of water is always necessary.
Foods to be avoided or used in small quantities are hot, spicy, and
acidic foods such as chilies, tomatoes, citrus fruits, raw onions,
garlic and spices. Coffee, black tea, alcohol and smoking are heating
in nature and should be avoided as well. Excessive quantities of meat,
chicken and eggs will also generate heat in the body and should be
avoided. In addition, food items that exhibit hot and dry characteristics
should not be consumed. These are foods that have sour, astringent
and pungent tastes. Excessive use of these tastes during summer leads
to weakness and roughness of the body. back

| IN
THE PRESENT MOMENT |
Our true home
is in the present moment.
To live in the present moment is a miracle.
The miracle is not to walk on water.
The miracle is to walk on the Green Earth in the present moment.
To appreciate the peace and the Beauty that is available now.
Peace is all around us, in the world and in nature.
And within us in our bodies and our spirits.
Once we learn to touch this peace.
We will be healed and transformed.
It is not a matter of faith;
It is a matter of practice. -- Thich Nhat Han
This is one of my all time favorites! And the author Thich Nhat Han

| EXPECTATIONS
WHILE EXPECTING |
| Once Again,
on my sacred journey of pregnancy, I am reminded how "expectations"
can get in the way of seeing how things actually are. And, if it were
not for my practice, I don't think I would be as open and willing
to let go of my "expectations" to follow the 'change in
course' as it naturally arises
At 8.5 months pregnant, my belly
has swelled bigger than I ever imagined possible. I had 'planned'
on teaching classes right up until two weeks before giving birth.
Then, I'd take a 'little' well-deserved vacation before baby arrives.
HUH!!! (Of course I'd have the strength and well-being to do this.
After all, I've seen other women do this.) Well, with a head bearing
down in my pelvis, I am finding it hard to walk 100 yards, let alone
commute to NYC. So, I 'unexpectedly' had to drop classes in NY a few
weeks earlier than planned and am gearing up to drop classes in NJ
too. Busted! Now, I am gratefully enjoying the time to rest, put my
legs up, prepare my nest, and stay near the AC. back
