WORDS OF WISDOM

"Gratitude is the intention to count-your-blessings every day, every minute, while avoiding, whenever possible, the belief that you need or deserve different circumstances." Timothy Miller

WILLIAM 101: LESSON 2 - ONE POINT FOCUS

Now that I am in intense studies with my new Guru William, you can be sure that I will pass on his wisdom in each issue with a William 101 column. This month’s Lessons is One Point Focus. Last issue I explained that William is colicky, so basically he’s uncomfortable and crying most of the time. Truth be told, during the first few weeks I was getting the A-S kicking’ of a life time. As I attended to Williams constant wails I would simultaneously be aware of the chatter in my head about my lack of sleep, achy body, unreturned phone calls, WORK, neighbors…and mostly, about how my heart ached that I couldn’t ease his pain. Then one night, in the middle of William’s shrieking, I completely snapped out of it. Actually, I should say snapped ‘Into It.’ Just as in a One-Pointed Concentration Meditation I simply stopped focusing on all my various discomforts and entirely shifted my concentration to William. As I let go of my repeating story line of anxieties, I began to grow more calm and centered. In fact, after just a few days of this practice I regained so much energy and strength that I no longer needed the same kind of sleep and I didn’t feel as distressed or depleted. Instead, I mainly felt gratitude and honor that I could serve William. HIS HEALTH situation didn’t change, but my way of being in it did. It’s just like on my yoga mat; my practice is drastically different when I am ALL there vs. when I find myself preoccupied with incessant rewinding and fast forwarding thoughts that are always in the background. Instead, when I sink fully into what I am doing, bringing my awareness into the foreground (present), no matter how hard the "task" or the "pose" is, it becomes more manageable. And, I become more intuitive about how to be in the "pose" with as little strain as possible. When I have less strain, I relax more. With William, as I relax more, my mind and heart are more open, WHICH ALLOWS ME TO fully experience the joy and gratitude I have for him no matter what’s going on or what he demands from me. This isn’t only good for me, it’s good for William. Phew! Once again, I am awed by how the Practice works Off the Mat. (I’m also happy to report that while William still has an industrial strength cry he’s starting to grow out of it and is now crying 40% of the time instead of 90%. And that’s good for everyone too!)   back to top

WHAT YOU DO YOU CHOOSE TO THINK ABOUT?
Roshi John Daido Loori has said that expressing gratitude is transformative, just as transformative as expressing complaint. Imagine an experiment involving two people. One spends ten minutes each morning and evening expressing gratitude, while the other spends the same amount of time practicing complaining. One subject is saying things like, "I hate my job. I can't stand this apartment. Why can't I make enough money? My spouse doesn't get along with me. That dog next door never stops barking and I just can't stand this neighborhood." The other is saying things like, "I'm grateful for the opportunity to work; there are so many people these days who can't even find a job. I'm grateful for my health. What a gorgeous day; I really like this fall breeze." They do this experiment for a year. Guaranteed, at the end of that year the person practicing complaining will have deeply reaffirmed all his negative "stuff" rather than having let it go, while the one practicing gratitude will be a very grateful person.    back to top

THANK YOU
"If the only prayer you say in your entire life is "Thank You," that will suffice." -- Meister Eckhart.

THE PRACTICE OF GIVING THANKS

Practicing gratitude (thanks giving) can have a profound effect on the quality of your day and it enriches your whole life: after all, you attract into your life that which you spend significant time thinking about. By choosing to spend some portion of your day focusing on those things for which you are grateful, you spend that much less time stewing over what you don't have or what did not happen. Upon waking up and after each yoga session, I always take a moment to bring to mind whatever I am grateful for at that moment. Try it next time you sit quietly at the end of your practice or when you awake; simply take a deep breath and bring to mind anything you are grateful for (big or small). Enjoy the feeling for a few moments and then send out your appreciation in
return.

YOGA FOR THE SEASON
A great way to deepen your practice is to slow it down. And, a slower practice is the perfect antidote to the frenzied pace of the holiday season. Slowing down is difficult for most students at first. We all feel compelled to do the next thing; get to the next posture. But you may just find that in slowing down there is much more to the posture than you first imagined. And, a slower practice with longer held postures can help you shift your focus from the outer to the inner; the surface of things to their deeper meaning and abundance. Try it: As you Increase the time you stay in your postures you have more time to explore what’s going on in your psyche as well as your body. As you hold the postures longer you can explore questions like: Where do I feel resistance? Am I adding to the resistance? Where can I let go? Can I let go more? You can also take time to bless each part of your body, or have gratitude for how your body serves you. Try to relax as you move deeper. If you feel that you need to come out or you will injure yourself...come out! However, if you feel restless or bored or ready to move on, try to relax and wait! Stay 2-3 more breaths in the posture and see what happens. Then come out of the pose.    back to top

THOUGHTFUL ARTICLES ON GRATITUDE

"Gratitude is the state of mind of thankfulness. As it is cultivated, we experience an increase in our "sympathetic joy," our happiness at another's happiness. Just as in the cultivation of compassion, we may feel the pain of others, so we may begin to feel their joy as well." — Stephen Levine

A PRAYER OF THANKS AND PRAISE - Peace Pilgrim's Beatitudes
Blessed are they who give without expecting even thanks in return, for they shall be abundantlyrewarded.
Blessed are they who translate every good thing they know into action, for ever higher truths shall be revealed unto them.
Blessed are they who do God's will without asking to see results, for great shall be their recompense.
Blessed are they who love and trust their fellow beings, for they shall reach the good in people and receive a loving response.
Blessed are they who have seen reality, for they know that not the garment of clay but that which activates the garment of clay is real and indestructible.
Blessed are they who see the change we call death as liberation from the limitation of this earth-life, for they shall rejoice with their loved ones who make the glorious transition.
Blessed are they who after dedicating their lives and thereby receiving a blessing, have the courage and faith to surmount the difficulties of the path ahead, for they shall receive a second blessing.
Blessed are they who advance toward the spiritual path without the selfish motive of seeking inner peace, for they shall find it.
Blessed are they who instead of trying to batter down the gates of the kingdom of heaven approach them humbly and lovingly and purified, for they shall pass right through. .     back to top
