Namaste Yogis and Yoginis,

Welcome to Yogalicious 41!

This city girl has been savoring the autumn brilliance. In October I led a weekend Yoga Retreat in the colorful foliage of the Berkshire Mountains. Then I went to the beautiful Omega campus upstate and participated (as a student) in week-long retreat with John Friend, Krishna Das, and Sharon Salzberg. I assure you that days filled with yoga, meditation, and wholesome food surrounded by nature’s incredible gifts can inspire the most heartfelt gratitude in any one. But how do we connect to this deep appreciation during the hustle of daily living? This Newsletter is filled with inspirations for taping into your well of thankfulness each moment of your day.

With gratitude,
Jillian

WORDS OF WISDOM

"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful."— Buddha

WILLIAM 101

"You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses." – Ziggy.
My son William is now 15 months! Just after his initial 8 plus months of industrial strength colicky crying, we discovered that he is highly allergic to wheat and gluten (as well eggs and seafood). After a trip to the emergency room, followed by allergy testing, I began the journey of researching gluten. Gluten is the protein component in Wheat, Rye, and Barley. It’s in all products that contain these grains and it’s extracted and used as a binding agent in an endless list of foods and products like malt, soy sauce, spices, flavorings, MSG, Carmel color, beverages, toothpaste, cereals, ice cream, vitamins, medicines, stickers and envelopes, and body lotions. And, this list is just the beginning. The meticulous awareness needed to create a diet and life style for William was totally daunting. (Plus since he is breastfeed, I need to follow the same my diet). Dreadfully, I began to fantasize about our challenging future: other toddlers innocently offering him cheerio’s; researching restaurants foods and cooking procedures (his food can’t even touch surfaces that have wheat or gluten crumbs); birthday parties; having to pack our own food when traveling; no pizza, etc… And there I was, somewhere in the middle of thinking that no pizza or birthday cake was a tragedy when something clicked. I just woke up and began to realize how lucky we were. My son is healthy! We don’t have to go through years of trying to figure out his condition. And I’ve learned so much about the quality foods, my whole family is going to benefit from a healthier diet and life style. In actuality, I am graced with this opportunity and, more than ever, I am grateful for the food we can eat! Wow, these thorns do have beautiful roses!

SHINING THROUGH YOUR ASANA PRACTICE

For my Berkshire Retreat, I asked students to bring photos of loved ones, religious relics, or objects that inspired them to feel their deepest sense of gratitude. Then they drew pictures of the sun and within the center of the sun wrote a personal mantra (word) that inspired their gratitude to flow and shine outward. Using these objects, they each created an altar at the head of their mat. Through our practice, the room radiated with warmth and joy as each student was continuously reminded of their deepest gratitude. Try making an altar at the head of your mat. If you go to group classes, bring a photo with you, a piece of jewelry, or a special leaf, flower or stone. Or for a daily reminder, create an altar in your home – a perfect space is by your bedside, in an area you spend quiet time, or even in a corner where you get dressed in the morning.    back to top

INSPIRING ARTICLE
"Envy may seem to be human nature, but deeper still is the innate delight in the well-being of others. By Anne Cushman http://www.yogajournal.com/wisdom/1157_1.cfm    back to top

FULLNESS

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." ~ Melody Beattie  back to top

DEVELOPING THE PRACTICE
Gratitude often appears to be something you have… not something you practice. Practicing gratitude can have a profound effect on the quality of your day, your health, and it enriches your whole life. And, by choosing to spend some portion of your day focusing on those things for which you are grateful, you spend that much less time stewing over what you don't have or what did not happen. Inevitably, you attract into your life that which you spend significant time thinking about. If you don’t already have a designated time you say Thanks, try picking a time easy for consistency. I practice at the beginning and end of my yoga practice. Try it upon waking or sleeping, before your morning coffee or any meal, or before or after your journey to work.  back to top

THANKS FOR WHAT?
Don’t limit yourself to the totally obvious. Expand you circle of gratitude. Jot down names of people you’ve known or even just admire (living and dead), the artists who add beauty to our lives, the great service providers like nurses, doctors, or educators who’ve helped you, your loved ones, or who simple contribute to the well-being of our society; places that make you happy; animals; nature; objects that bring you comfort; and even opportunities that have come your way. Once you’ve created your list, pick one subject to focus on each month during your regular ‘practice’    back to top

EATING FOR THE SEASON
Sarah Bond is a holistic Nutritionist and has just finished the Bright Spirit Yoga Teacher Training. Here’s what she says about eating well this season. "It's time to prepare your body for the cold winter months ahead. During this time we begin to eat heartier foods, we rest more, we may even sleep more. We in fact hibernate to some degree (just like the animals). Our activity level tends to slow down a bit. Don't take this as a sign of laziness. Think of it as your body preparing to keep you warm and strong to fight off any illness or colds. Some of the best foods we eat in the fall months are the healthiest. Here are some of the best fall foods to eat for weight loss, energy, vitamins and a "full" feeling; Butternut Squash, apples, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and cabbage. Enjoy the fall and listen to your body as it prepares for the cold winter months ahead! For more information contact Sarah at Hints4life@aol.com. 201-320-3864 cell.   back to top

THANK G-D FOR PARADISE!
What a dream! I get to lead an annual week-long yoga retreat in the Caribbean Playground of Isla Mujeres, Mexico again this year! Our hotel, nestled by lush vegetation, sits right on the most beautiful beach. Yoga classes are inspired by our studio which is a wooden, open-air, thatch-roofed palapa. It is raised on stilts and enveloped by tropical trees. During class we are visited by lizards, serenaded by birds, and caressed by sweet island breezes. It’s total heaven. But for me the most gratifying part is working with the same students, all week and witnessing the vibrant changes that happen in such a short time. In only a few days the busy city melts off revealing relaxed joyful bodies and spirits. It is a wonderful challenge to craft this week-long adventure; giving it structure yet keeping it loose enough so each person discoveries their individual balance.

Come join me for our next journey to Mexico. March 19-26, 2005. Space is going fast. For more info email yoga_julie@yahoo.com. For photos and student comments check out www.yogajillian.com (under the Photo gallery and Teachings/Schedule).

THE FREEDOM OF HIP OPENERS With Jillian
December 5. 2:00-4:00pm. $35 in advance. $45 at the door.
Tight Hips? Back pain? Stiff Hamstrings? Because we carry our weight in our hips; physical and emotional patterns can get caught and embedded here. As a result we may accumulate undue stress in the low back or excessive gripping in the hamstrings. Using a special sequence of asana, we will move slowly and deeply to release the hips and free patterns of holding throughout the body. Come prepared to have fun and for the possibility of profound release on every level.

Thanks for reading everyone! It is a privilege to share with you here. I would be very appreciative if you help spread the inspiration and send this to your friends!
