CITYNY Magazine — Feb/Mar 2000

   N E W S L E T T E R.. A R C H I V E S • Y O G A L I C I O U S #49 April - May 2006

Namaste Yogis and Yoginis,

Ah spring, glorious spring! This past February, I planted bulbs (for the first time ever) despite the fact that it was three months after recommended bulb planting season.  Actually, my goal was more to relieve my toddler’s cabin fever than to grow tulips. Sure I hoped they’d bloom, and yes I felt a bit guilty exciting William with the promise of flowers come spring knowing that we didn’t met one of the planting criteria on the bulb package. But we were having a great time digging in the dirt and I figured he’d forget about them by spring anyway.

Well, surprise, surprise! Our weary rotten-onion-like bulbs are now busting into strong green sprouts!  William and I are observing them grow day by day.

This potential for energy to spring forth in unlikely conditions is so inspiring. In yogic philosophy, this intrinsic force is called Prana and it is known to be pulsing not only through the soil and sprouts but it is in each one of us. It is always there, even when we feel out of touch with it. This inner vitality longs to radiate out. And, when it’s stoked even a little it will begin to surge and radiate like a flower budding up through the crack in a side walk. Pranic energy intensifies in spring and as we become mindful of natures’ powerful rhythm we can better harness its transformational and healing powers.

I hope you enjoy this MEGA SPRING issue of Yogalicious which is filled with inspirations to help you flourish this spring and all year round.

With joy,
Jillian

WILLIAM 101 – FOR BEST RESULTS, GET NAKED!

By no design of our own, our 2.5 year old William initiated himself into the world of potty training. During a week of running ‘au natural’ on the beach with a band of bare-butted toddlers, William had the opportunity for some profound self-study. Removing the concealment of a diaper, he was finally able to examine the relationship between the internal urge to ‘relieve’ himself and the external action that follows. Within a few days of his revelation, he began announcing when he had to go to the bathroom. Towards the end of the week, while sitting on the bed reading William said “I’ll be right back” and took himself to the toilet. Hiding behind a wall, my husband and I peered out just enough to watch him do all the right moves (even flush!) He was pretty impressed with himself and our beaming pride further excited him. But let me stress that I really had little to do with this transformation. Of course we discussed the ‘potty’, read a few books, and offered some ‘role-modeling’, but his desire to change came from with in. And his ability to change came from the opportunity to accurately observe himself. It is much like the lesson we receive over and over again from yoga and meditation; the first step towards creating enduring changes, is to simply observe how things actual are. Through our practice, we learn to examine how we habitually react to the stimulus in our lives. In many ways, yoga and meditation practice help us strip things away, get naked, so we can see ourselves more clearly (this is self-study is called Svadyaya in Yogic Philosophy). Once we see ourselves honestly, we naturally begin to move towards health and wellbeing. As Steven Covey explains, “Between the stimulus and response is a space. In this space lies our freedom to choose our response. In these choices lie our growth and our happiness.” PS. William might say “just get naked!” _  back to top

ONLY SKIN DEEP?
Many of us find it hard to “feel the joy” in winter. Research confirms that this seasonal mood shift is not in your imagination but is a common condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder. But there are many ways to treat yourself to induce a lighter mood even when winter gets you down. Here’s a good start with nutrition to beat the blues: http://www.lifefirst.info/article-winter-blues.html   back to top

LITE UP WITH WHEAT GRASS
A shot of wheatgrass will give you a surge of energy and help strengthen the liver, cleanse the blood of toxins, purify the liver, and clean out the colon. It is said that it has such a complete range of nutrients that it can, by itself, sustain life. Visit your local health food store for a hit. back to top

FEAST ON FOODS THAT FIGHT OFF TOXINS
• Beets: support detoxification in the intestines, blood and liver.
Lemon and orange peels: aid liver in neutralizing carcinogens
Radicchio, escarole, endive: help release of toxins from GI track
Cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli: help liver detoxify chemicals, drugs, pollutants
Oatmeal, apples, pears, strawberries, peas, beans, provide soluble fiber to soak up toxins in the intestine.
Asparagus, avocadoes, raw spinach, walnuts, and cooked chicken - aids in the removal of fat-soluble toxins
Egg yolks, onions, beans, garlic, help clear the body of discard able drugs and hormones.
Add warming spices and detoxifying herbs to your meals, salads, or tea. To help with digestion, elimination, and purification use ginger, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric or cardamom.
Most importantly, don't starve yourself! Your body will react by saving up excess fat, instead of letting you burn it off. This will only keep the toxins inside.  back to top

MAXIMIZE YOUR SPRING YOGA ROUTINE
Yoga always places a high value on purification of body and mind at all levels, all the time. But a spring yoga practice can place more emphasis on detoxifying by building extra heat and incorporating more twists and inversions. Begin your day with the Sun Salutations http://www.yogajournal.com/practice/1040_1.cfm and standing poses to produce internal heat, generate sweat, and improve circulation. They also help clear the mind and lighten your mood. Add daily twists http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/487_1.cfm to your routine to stimulate the organs (especially the liver) and balance the hemispheres of the brain to enable greater mental and emotional balance. Include gentle inversions http://www.yogajournal.com/newtoyoga/1140_1.cfm to aid the flow of blood back to the lungs and heart for purification. In addition, inversions and most yoga asanas assist the lymphatic system. The Lymphatic system circulates lymph fluid and transports cellular waste, viruses, and bacteria from the tissues to the lymph nodes. Enjoy your practice knowing you are cleansing every class!

MANGO MANIA AND MORE
We just returned from another amazing trip to paradise! This year’s Mexico Yoga Retreat was as wonderful as ever. I am personally feeling super light after 11 days of yoga, many mangos, avocados, sun shine, white sand, blue waters, and a great time with my students and family! The most rewarding part of leading a retreat for me is witnessing the dramatic shifts in my students as they move through the week. I am very deliberate about sequencing the overall week, and all 12 classes so that students can progressively move through their body, mind and spirit in a way that change can happen gracefully and have enduring effects. Day by day, the group grounds, relaxes and opens slowly in order to create a more profound cumulative effect. Transformation happens on so many levels from melting shoulders to opening hips and hearts. Of course we always get to celebrate someone’s first hand stand or full lotus! But most importantly, we each share in the delight of watching each other leave the retreat far more clear, balanced and light hearted than we arrived. I am super excited for my next retreat July 23-28 – it will be the first time I will be leading a week of deep relaxation and heart opening at Kripalu Yoga Center in Lenox Mass. With information, we are able to make positive changes which allow transformation that ripples to our outer forms. Through yoga, pranayama, meditation, and lecture you will learn more about the layers of the Subtle Body and techniques to access and open these layers leaving you with a more sophisticated approach to your yoga practice.
