—— IN THIS ISSUE ——

When we are swimming in a river and cannot see the bank, it is difficult to notice the current. We are moving so much with the river that we may scarcely see its flow. But if we go to the bank where we have firm ground it is much easier to see how the river is flowing. The practice of yoga encourages this unhampered seeing to simply happen.” — T.K.V. Desikachar

CHANGE
While I personally ALWAYS wish summer lasted year round, this fall has been quite beautiful so far! As the seasons change and grow colder, your practice may start to feel different. You may start to feel different. You may find you are not as light or open as you were with the warmer weather of summer. Pay attention to the way you feel, instead of ‘expecting’ your practice to be any particular way. Allow your practice, on and off the mat, to change and explore where you are now. (PS. Try taking a whole day - or better yet, a whole weekend - and curl up on the couch and watch movies! I did this past weekend and it was great.)      back to top

THE HEART OF YOGA
I just returned from a spectacular 5-day workshop with T.K.V Desikachar. He is the son of Krishnamacharya, one of the greatest yogis of the century, and teacher of B.K.S Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois (Ashtanga Yoga). Being with Mr. Desikachar was not only an honor but also very uplifting. Even with 180 yogis in the room, he was able to make the experience feel intimate and powerful. He is gentle and very effective in communicating his teachings. Desikachar teaches a method called Viniyoga, based on the fundamental principle that yoga must be continually adapted to the individuals changing needs; respecting each individual’s physical, emotional and mental conditions. In addition, each stage of life requires a different approach. As children our yoga practice should support balanced growth and development of body and mind. As adults it should enhance health and promote the ability to be productive in the world. As seniors, our practice should help us maintain health and inspire the deeper quest for self-realization. His Book, THE HEART OF YOGA: Developing A Personal Practice (Inner Traditions International) discusses all the elements of yoga and is helpful for exploring your own home practice.      back to top

INSIGHT TO RELAXATION
Many eye problems in later life are due to a loss of tone in the eye muscles. As muscles become rigid and less supple, the ability of the lens of the eye to focus at different distances is reduced. In addition, due to the eye’s connection to the brain via the optic nerve, any eye tension present tends to create tension in the mind (which creates tension in the body). Performing yoga eye exercises helps reduce tension in the eye muscles and mind, and may improve your eyesight. YOGA AND PREGNANCY YES!
YOGA will bring endless benefits throughout the childbearing year. Prenatal Yoga will help to open and restore the pelvic floor, relieve back and neck strain, maintain strength and flexibility, improve postural alignment, develop mental clarity and stability. For the greatest benefit, it is best to begin your yoga program early in your pregnancy, or before you conceive. Always let your teacher know you are pregnant and ensure that they are skilled in prenatal yoga. If you are relatively new to yoga, it is best to work with a teacher in private sessions to learn how to modify poses throughout your pregnancy. GOOD BOOKS: 1. Preparing for Birth with YOGA. By Janet Balaskas. 2. Yoga for Pregnancy: Safe and Gentle Stretches by Sandra Jordan (breaks down poses by trimester.) (Both available through Amazon.com. Amazon also has prenatal videos - but I have not found one I love yet. If you know of one, email me!)     back to top
